Comac C919

The Comac C919 is a narrow-body airliner developed by Chinese aircraft manufacturer Comac. The development program was launched in 2008. Production of the prototype began in December 2011, with the first prototype being ready on 2 November 2015 and having its maiden flight on 5 May 2017. First commercial deliveries of the aircraft are expected no earlier than 2022 or 2023, to China Eastern Airlines. The aircraft, primarily constructed with aluminium alloys, is to be powered by either CFM International LEAP or ACAE CJ-1000A turbofan engines, and be able to carry 156 to 168 passengers in a normal operating configuration up to 5,555 km (3000 nmi). As of 31 August 2018, Comac has 1008 commitments including 305 firm orders, mostly from Chinese leasing companies or airlines.

Having worked with some young engineers from the Shengyang Aircraft Corporation (SAC) which is in some ways similar to COMAC, I can say that the C919 or more importantly, the C929 and possibly C939 if it comes into being, will likely be great aircraft.

The young engineers are extremely bright and knowledgeable, they only lack experience but are gaining that with every undertaking and as such are learning exponentially from their failures.

COMAC is taking a long term approach now toward the development of the C919 as they have learnt a lot from the certification process for the AR 21 in their attempt to develop a product which will sell globally.

I'm old enough to remember the first impressions associated with Japanese products back in the 1960's and the huge reverse in perceptions by the time the 1980's came to an end. China is currently in the begining of that transition and in some areas, moving away from the 'cheap and inexpensive' perception to the 'best in class' perception.

If the C919 progresses slowly and methodically toward completion over the next five years, it will likely be a 'best in class' product. If however there is a rush to meet deadlines, well there is a huge risk associated with such approaches and not one the global public is likely to appreciate.
