In April 2023, the Götheborg of Sweden, the world's largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship, played a pivotal role in a maritime rescue off the coast of France. On April 25th, a sailing vessel named Corto experienced a rudder failure while over 50 nautical miles from shore. The crew issued a distress call, which was promptly answered by the Götheborg. Despite the significant size difference between the two vessels, with the Götheborg measuring approximately 50 meters and the Corto just 8 meters, the Götheborg's crew successfully towed the disabled sailboat through the night. The following day, they coordinated with a French search and rescue boat from Paimpol to ensure the Corto's safe passage to port.

The sailors aboard the Corto expressed profound gratitude, noting the surreal experience of being rescued by a ship reminiscent of the 18th century. They praised the Götheborg's crew for their professionalism and kindness, highlighting the crew's consistent communication and adaptability to the Corto's limitations and the prevailing weather conditions.

This event underscored the Götheborg's operational capabilities and the enduring spirit of maritime camaraderie. The rescue garnered international attention, with media coverage spanning the USA, New Zealand, and Europe. In recognition of their exemplary seamanship, the crew of the Götheborg was awarded 10,000 SEK by Stiftelsen Sveriges Sjömanshus, an organization dedicated to supporting Swedish seafarers.

The Götheborg is a modern replica of an 18th-century Swedish East Indiaman, meticulously constructed using traditional techniques. Launched in 2003, it stands as one of the world's largest operational wooden sailing ships, blending historical authenticity with contemporary functionality.
