What is a DNS server?
The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. When users type domain names such as ‘yahoo.com’ or ‘atrc.net.pk’ into web browsers, DNS is responsible for finding the correct IP address for those sites. Browsers then use those addresses to communicate with origin servers or CDN edge servers to access website information. This all happens thanks to DNS servers: machines dedicated to answering DNS queries.
What does a DNS server do ?
All computers on the Internet, from your smart phone or laptop to the servers that serve content for massive retail websites, find and communicate with one another by using numbers. These numbers are known as IP addresses. When you open a web browser and go to a website, you don't have to remember and enter a long number. Instead, you can enter a domain name like example.com and still end up in the right place.
A DNS service is a globally distributed service that translates human readable names like www.example.com into the numeric IP addresses like 19.1.23.231 that computers use to connect to each other. The Internet’s DNS system works much like a phone book by managing the mapping between names and numbers. DNS servers translate requests for names into IP addresses, controlling which server an end user will reach when they type a domain name into their web browser. These requests are called queries.
DNS is a global network database that enables websites and email to function properly. Practically speaking, DNS converts your domain names into numbers (IP addresses) that make it possible for computers to find and access your company's internet resources (including websites, email, virtual private networks, and file transfer protocol sites).
FASTER, SAFER, AND ACCURATE QUERY RESOLUTION
In a connected world, as internet users expect seamless and secure online experiences, the domain name system (DNS) has become more difficult and complex to manage than ever before. The emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices (like thermostats and watches) and online threats leave businesses struggling to find the right DNS security strategy for their IT needs.
Advantages of having your own DNS server.
Having the experience and DNS knowledge in-house is a constant challenge, as well as having the dedicated resources to correctly manage and implement a sound strategy to meet today's internet demands. Whether you are fully outsourcing your DNS or partnering with a provider to supplement your own DNS infrastructure, the business-critical nature of DNS means it is one of the most important decisions you will make as an organization.
A Reliable DNS service is crucial to doing business well. Without it, your websites and online applications are vulnerable to outages, attacks, and email disruptions. The long-term risks of inferior DNS service include customer frustration and negative brand associations.
