Proposal:

Study & Research on 3rd Generation of Mobile Communication Systems (UMTS Technology)

Looks Good.

Introduction:

This research is to provide a technical overview of UMTS (W-CDMA). It is appropriate for personnel in planning, deployment, RF engineering, network performance, and network operations.

UMTS (W-CDMA) is one of the third generation wireless systems. UMTS is designed to increase a subscriber’s data rates and system capacity. UMTS is an evolution of the current core networks of GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) and GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). The UMTS radio access network is based on the CDMA radio access technology This exciting technology is now being deployed in many parts of the globe. Further releases have been planned that introduce new concepts and features that give the user the most comprehensive user-friendly and personalized mobile access to tomorrow’s consolidated voice and data network. The future of UMTS includes a replacement of the circuit switched core network with a SIP-based network and an IP-based radio access network. All these enhancements have the goal of providing services with one consolidated IP-based wireless network.

UMTS has been designed as the next evolutionary step of GSM and GPRS. UMTS was developed with the requirement that an existing GSM operator can evolve their network to UMTS in stages. The first step of this evolution is to move from the voice only network of GSM to the voice and packet network of GPRS. The GPRS step provides limited packet capabilities as an interim step to UMTS. UMTS, the second evolutionary step, is designed to support a highly efficient air interface, data rates up to 2 Mbps and

the existing core network that is used in GSM and GPRS. In both steps, the research includes the types of additional equipment required, the impact on the air interface and the impact on the existing network to add the additional components. In conclusion, the next phases of UMTS are presented. This will include a discussion of the architecture and benefits of the IP Multimedia Subsystem and the All-IP Radio Access Network.

Why I am choosing it..?

The reason why i am interested in UMTS (W-CDMA) because of my personal interest and it is a new and emerging future technology and has so much potential to become popular due to its characteristics, benefits and features which are far more better than existing GSM technology.

Benefits are for yourself. The benefits should be for others. Your doing the project does not seem to be helping others in some way.
This needs to be fixed. You do not have to remain on the topic of UMTS to fix it. It can be another useful topic which shall benefit the people in Karachi, Pakistan or worldwide.

To get results you also need to have some experience in the field and if you are selecting some new topic without any experience then the topic needs to be important enough to start from scratch and hardly experts are available.

Who will do it..?

You cannot expect anyone to help you unles you do not pay them or work for them in some way. If you write that someone is going to help you, then you also need to explain why they shall help you and what they are going to give to them in return for helping you.

This section is importnat for group projects to explain the tasks done in detail by each member.

During my research project I will refer to some technical persons to help me out some of them are working with me.

"Some technical persons" is too vague to be acceptable. Also what if they refuse to help you ? Mention the backup plan. If they refuse you need to do it all is an example. Things like I was placed some of my project parts on someone else and they did not do it or left is going have detrimental effects on your project's output.

Project Time line:

Time line may varie and it depends upon how deep u go into research and gather some valuable information to achieve your goal and purpose of the research., minimum 100hrs and may exceed, till 200-250 hrs.

This needs to be elaborated with estimates with detailed tasks.
Hours per week and what you are planning to accomplish in each week. Also learn to use formal US English, "English" english. Not abbreviated Internet IM Chat English. Fix spellings and grammar as you go along. If you do not know English, then get the help of someone who does. Mention them in the credits or do something form them in return.

Problems:

UMTS Technology is little unknown here in Pakistan but very popular in Europe and north American region now days, so lots of research work through Internet will be done and I will refer some other best possible technical resources available to me.

Timing Report

Timing report format is ok but the entries are separated by more than 15 minutes. Preferrable range is 5 Minutes to 10 minutes between entries and max 15 minutes between each entry.

Date: 13th Feb, 2006

11:00pm:  Started visiting atrc.net.pk to understand what is actually required when making proposal for research document.

11:40pm: Visited some websites to find out basic introduction of my Project.

Date: 14th Feb 2006

19:20pm:  Started making proposal document and gathering data for it

21:00pm: Proposal E-mailed to Mr . Khawar Nehal

It is good that you sent your proposal first, you shall be able to get more time to create a beneficial project and can move on to the next step. Proposal number 2. Good effort.

5 points for sending it in first.

Relative grading. The student with the maximum points shall get 100% and the others are scaled linearly.

Now for the format.

HTML is the standard for all generated documents.
Second if you need to send a compound document then you need to use OpenOffice.org. This standard is XML based.

Further proprietary doc files from anyone shall be ignored.

Presentation are to be in Impress format.
