Project Ideas from Khawar Nehal updated 11 March 2006.

For these ideas I already know what kinds of problems can be fixed and meet the criteria of not being done before,

You need to evaluate at least one of them or come up with your own problem.

If you come up with your own problem then you need to make sure of two things.

1. It is very beneficial to many people
2. It has not been done before.

And meets the other required criteria mentioned in the proposal writing guide.

To be able to do this suitably, I estimate that it shall take 10 - 40 hours of serious work to get somewhere near an approvable proposal.

Save all of your work for at least two months after the end of the semester for query purposes. DO NOT FORGET THIS. THIS IS FOR ALL STUDENTS and is being repeated here.

Excuses shall NOT be accepted but result in guaranteed loss of points because the excuses shall be taken as a statement of lack of seriousness and irresponsibility.

You do not HAVE to come up with a new idea. To save time you can select one listed and find problems in that. Then I can provide faster responses to questions about project topics that I already have some idea about.

For the ideas listed you have to read, understand then ask. I am not going to provide a clear complete proposal because this is something the student needs to develop.

IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL)

"the key to managing IT services"

ITIL® (the IT Infrastructure Library) is the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. ITIL® provides a cohesive set of best practice, drawn from the public and private sectors internationally. It is supported by a comprehensive qualifications scheme, accredited training organisations, and implementation and assessment tools. The best practice processes promoted in ITIL® support and are supported by, the British Standards Institution's standard for IT service Management (BS15000).

http://www.itil.co.uk/

The ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) consists of 7 sets: Service Support; Service Delivery; Planning to Implement Service Management; ICT Infrastructure Management; Applications Management; Security Management; The Business Perspective.

Although the UK Government created the ITIL, it has rapidly been adopted across the world as the standard for best practice in the provision of IT Service.

The main focus of IT Service Management (ITSM) itself is generally divided into two main areas, Service Support and Service Delivery. Together, these comprise the disciplines that embrace provision and management of effective IT services.

Information Technology Infrastructure Library

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

(Redirected from ITIL)
Jump to: navigation, search

The Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a customizable framework of best practices that promote quality computing services in the information technology (IT) sector. ITIL addresses the organisational structure and skill requirements for an IT organisation by presenting a comprehensive set of management procedures with which an organisation can manage its IT operations. These procedures are supplier independent and apply to all aspects of IT infrastructure. Since the mid 1990's, ITIL has been promoted as a standard for IT Service Management and is similar to Information Services Procurement Library (ISPL), the Application Services Library (ASL), Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), and Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT). ITIL is built on a process-model view of controlling and managing operations.

ITIL is published in a series of books, each of which covers one topic. The names ITIL and IT Infrastructure Library are Registered Trade Marks of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), which is an Office of the United Kingdom's Treasury. The content of the books is protected by Crown Copyright.

The recommendations of ITIL were developed in the late 1980's by the Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA), which merged into the OGC in April, 2001 and disappeared as a distinct organization. [1] The CCTA created ITIL in response to the growing dependence on information technology to meet business needs and goals.

In December 2005, The OGC issued notice of an ITIL refresh [2], commonly known as ITIL v3, to be completed initially by April 2006.

The project is to create a course, test and assignments for ITIL.

For multiple proposals on the same topic. I shall decide to either select the first best proposal based on seriousness of efforts, or split the topic if the topic warrants such efforts.

Having one serious person work on ITIL is good enough currently.

Ideas from LUMS.

e-commerce
With the promulgation of electronic transaction ordinance 2002, the number of on-line services being offered should increase manifold.

Develop custom-coded software packages that meet the needs of the various financial institutions.
Client: Financial institutions both public and private.

e-governance
Although the use of computers is widespread in the educational institutions the various departments of the government and public utilities companies have still not embraced this technology with open arms.

Develop an action plan to inform these departments of the benefits this technology will provide and then develop software packages to meet their requirements. We should also take the initiative to make them aware of the benefits of on-line services – efficiency and transparency.
Client: Government departments and private businesses.

e-ticketing
Make the ticketing system of bus, rail and air accessible to all.

Develop a custom-coded software package for the companies that provide the above mentioned modes of transportation, so that people can book tickets from their computers and then can either pay for it over the internet or can go and buy it from the nearest office within a specified period of time, say a day.
Client: Railways, airlines.

Education
We should make the industry aware of the advances in technologies.

Broadcast their courses to the government and the private sector over the air [probably by using the satellite] and internet. The employee will not be away from work for an extended period of time and at the same time will increase his/her knowledge and consequently productivity.
Client: Private businesses and government departments.

Health
Provide the needed healthcare to all in a timely manner.

Develop a project where the medical records of everyone are stored in a central location and all the hospitals are connected together. So, whenever a patient goes to a hospital seeking treatment his/her file can be immediately downloaded giving the doctor a clearer picture of the patient’s past history and thus a correct diagnosis of his/her current ailment.
Client: Hospitals.

Transportation
Urban areas of the country are either experiencing or will soon experience congested roads. Need to do real-time traffic signal synchronization on urban roads.

Help in modeling and simulating traffic flows that will lead to development of a system that will reduce the congestion and at the same time warn the motorist about the congested routes and suggest alternate paths.

Develop a system that should guarantee a smooth flow of traffic[law abiding motorists and always functional traffic signals] this will reduce the time wasted sitting in traffic and will result in an individual who is less stressed when he/she reaches the workplace and hopefully this will increase his/her productivity at work too.

Develop a system to apprehend the violator – the traffic signal violations are a serious crime, however, in Pakistan these violations are a part of everyday driving – smart cameras should be installed at busy intersections that should take a picture of both the violator and the license plate of the vehicle and then send the information to the concerned authorities who should take appropriate action against the motorist or the pedestrian.

Help computerize the data collection and storage facilities for various transportation agencies.
Client: Department of transportation, National Highway Authority.

Telecom and Internet Companies
Some of the areas in which we can provide consultancy services are:

Performance modeling of broadband networks (IP, ATM, and wireless)
Performing traffic analysis and characterization
Designing links for microwave, satellite, wireless and optical networks
Solving multi-access issues in land line and wireless networks
Resolving routing issues in land line and wireless networks
Optical communication networks
Automating remote processes such as billing
Signaling and network management and
Giving seminars, short courses or lecture series on a variety of topics ranging from technical to management issues
Client: Telecom and cellular service providers.

Pakistan Railways
Considerable revenue is lost if a train fails to meet its schedule. Need to automate rail signaling and scheduling.

Develop a system that efficiently routes, schedules and eliminates the congestion along the path.
Client: Railways.

Civil Aviation Authority
The air travel is going to become more dangerous in the future with too many planes in the sky at the same time.

Help upgrade the civil aviation authority’s computer systems.
Client: Civil Aviation Authority.

Water and Power Development Authority
Government is losing a lot of revenue in the power sector and the public is also suffering due to frequent power outages.

Help increase revenue of the department by simulating the losses in the national electronic grid network.

Help alleviate the suffering of the people by looking at the problem in two dimensions, i.e., predicting power demand and consumption versus power generation capacity.
Client: WAPDA.

Department of Irrigation
For the department, some of the areas where consultancy services can be provided are:

Computerization of records and decision making
In developing decision-support systems for controlling dams and weirs
In predicting loss of water through evaporation, seepage, breaches, etc.
Client: Department of Irrigation.

Department of Defense
Collaborate with the department of defense and help them:

In developing equipment that can be used for tracking and identifying objects whether these objects are in the air, on ground or under the sea.
Client: Air Force and Navy

Industry
Provide services to the local industry in the areas of:

Signal and image processing applications, such as mineral exploration, determining vegetation yield, seismic analysis, weather pattern study, etc.
Developing new products for the private and government owned telecommunication companies
Automation and computerization
Planning, scheduling, designing, processing and product optimization
Logistic management
Client: Industries.
