1. Pre-Filter (Sediment Filter):

  1. The pre-filter, often referred to as a sediment filter, is the first stage of an RO system. It is typically a porous filter designed to remove large particles, sediments, and debris from the water.
  2. This filter protects the delicate RO membrane from damage or clogging by larger contaminants. Common materials used in sediment filters include polypropylene, spun polypropylene, and pleated polyester.
  3. It is essential to replace the sediment filter regularly to ensure its effectiveness in preventing clogs and preserving the lifespan of the RO membrane.

2. Activated Carbon Filter (Pre-Carbon Filter):

  1. The activated carbon filter, also known as the pre-carbon filter, follows the sediment filter in the RO system. It is typically composed of activated carbon granules or blocks.
  2. This filter primarily removes chlorine, chloramines, and organic compounds from the water. It also helps eliminate odors and improve the taste of the water.
  3. Activated carbon is porous and has a large surface area, allowing it to adsorb impurities effectively. Over time, activated carbon filters can become saturated and lose their effectiveness, so they require periodic replacement.

3. RO Membrane:

  2. This filter typically contains activated carbon, similar to the pre-carbon filter. Its purpose is to enhance the final taste and quality of the purified water.
  3. Like the pre-carbon filter, the post-carbon filter requires periodic replacement to maintain water quality.

5. Alkaline Filter (Optional):

  1. Some RO systems include an alkaline filter as an optional component. This filter is designed to increase the pH of the purified water and add minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, back into the water.
  2. The alkaline filter can improve the taste of the water and make it slightly alkaline, which is preferred by some individuals for its potential health benefits.
